So, Thanet Wanderers U13s in buoyant mood after the previous 2 weeks results set off on the hottest weekend so far this year to Folkestone to contest the Kent Bowl Finals. After two previous rounds at Park House this felt like a home game.

Drawn against Cranbrook, Beccehamians and Alleynians Thanet were looking forward to three evenly contested games. However, on arrival a rearranged draw due to the late withdrawal of Alleynians Thanet faced two longer games in the sweltering heat.

Renowned to be slow starters Thanet played Cranbrook in their first game and the coaches and parents were pleased to see that the tempo and teamwork from the previous 2 weeks had carried on. Thanet raced into a 40-0 lead at half time thanks to tries from Oz W, Ralph H, Harrison Q, Flynn S, James P, Josh P & 2 from Capt. Max R. Changes at half time lead to a tighter game in the second half with Cranbrook coming back with 1 try before Thanet ran out 65-5 Winners thanks to further tries from Dennis D with a classic Pick and go, Josh ‘Crazy Legs’ P, Max R passing to Ollie J over the line and 2 from the hard hitting Patrick S.

The second games was a win at all costs game with the winner likely to take the Bowl Trophy. Beccehamians having had a game rest started strongly and Thanet had to fight hard for a 3-0 half time lead thanks to Oz W and 2 more from Josh ‘crazy legs’ P. Fresh legs at half time and a tiring bigger Becs side meant Thanet scored 5 further tries from Beau T, Oz W, James P and Capt Max R scored 2 tries on his return from the sin bin for a final 40-0 score.

This meant Thanet had won their first Kent Final since U8s. Coaches and parents extremely proud of the way the boys have performed over the past 3 weeks the Poole Tour helping to gel the Team. The increased aggression in the rucks and the awesome scrummaging meant that Thanet had a lot more time and space to spin the ball wide.

Next week sees 12 of the boys contesting their first Kent 7s at Canterbury and we can only hope that this style of play will continue.

POW goes to Captain Max R who despite his 2 mins in the sin bin still managed to be joint top scorer with Josh ‘Crazy leg’ P with 4 tries apiece. The award could have gone to anyone today with every member of the squad making a great contribution.
