NEWS FROM UPTON JUNIOR SCHOOL

Upton girls’ soccer players have vowed to return in fighting form next season for the Kent schools finals.

The side impressed fellow players and supporters as they progressed through the local stages to represent Thanet in the county finals at Thamesmead at the weekend.

The well-drilled side from Broadstairs maintained their fine form in their bid to retain the Kent girls’ title.

Upton started strongly during the group stage, scoring seven and conceding just two in their four games.

A 3-0 victory over St. John’s was followed by narrow wins over Herne Bay (1-0) and Bedenwell (2-1) with the final group game finishing in a 1-1 draw against Meopham.

Sports coach Jordan McLaurin said:

“In the semi-final against Joyden’s Wood our girls played some fantastic football and dominated the game.

However, we saw shots cleared off the goal line and hit the woodwork too – the ball would just not go in and we lost 0-1.

But true to form Upton girls’ showed great character and never let their heads drop, securing third spot in the tournament with a dominant victory over Scott’s Park.

Although not the result we had hoped for at the start of the day, I hope the girls are as proud of themselves as I am of them because they were absolutely fantastic and a credit to the schools and themselves.”

Deputy Head of School Dave Walker echoed that sentiment. He said:

“The girls battled hard to retain the Kent title for themselves and for schools in Thanet who they represented with skill and sportsmanship.

I am sure Upton girls will be raring to go when the Thanet tournament starts again in the autumn with the aim of reaching the county finals yet again.

The school is very proud of the players, supporters and their sports coaches.”
