On Tuesday 15 January, a group of Sandwich Technology School students met with Nick Dunn from the Kent Football Association, who will be delivering an FA Referees Course at the school in February. The course will lead to registered referee status – either Level 7 County Referee or Level 8 Youth Referee.

Twelve students and one member of staff will be taking part in the programme, which requires the successful completion of a written assessment on the laws of the game as well as the practical application of officiating skills on the field of play. It is hoped that the course will provide valuable experience and future employment prospects as well as forging links with the local community and providing a valuable resource to local football clubs.

Nick Dunn said

“We are delighted to be partnering with Sandwich Technology School for what is hoped will become a regular fixture in both our recruitment calendar and the school’s academic year. Recruiting more match officials is imperative to the longevity of the game, so we are delighted that we have a number of STS pupils who have expressed an interest in a different perspective of the game. We are very excited to be delivering the course to these pupils and look forward to supporting their journeys as referees!”

This initiative has been made possible by the generosity of both Deal Town Rangers and Kent County Council. Mrs Savage said

“We are delighted to be working with the Kent Football Association and enormously grateful to Deal Town Rangers, who are sponsoring and mentoring students on the course, and to Councillor Sue Chandler who has helped the school to secure a KCC grant to make this fabulous opportunity possible.”
