Primary school children descended upon the City’s Rugby Club on Thursday for their annual Tag Rugby Festival.
The friendly tournament, organised by the Canterbury Academy Sports Partnership, was very well attended, with numerous schools from Canterbury and surrounding areas fielding teams.
As soon as I arrived I could see that this was going to be a great event. Some teams were warming up next to the pitches while others had just started their first round of matches. There was a fantastic atmosphere around the impressive grounds of Canterbury Rugby Club with, seemingly, every successful passage of play being cheered and applauded by the players and their supporters.
The emphasis of the festival was very much upon fair play and this was clearly evident both on and off the pitch. Players mixed and chatted during their rest games and then took this positive atmosphere onto the pitches with them as they played.
The games, however, were still very competitive with players giving absolutely everything as they tried to outwit and outscore their opponents. Tries were celebrated and ‘tags’ applauded while every game ended with handshakes all around.
As I walked around and spoke with the players it was obvious they were really enjoying themselves. They described the try they had just scored or the tackle they had made with real enthusiasm and couldn’t wait until their next game. Whether they had just won or lost, beaming smiles were to be seen everywhere.
At the end of the festival, Wickhambreaux 1st Team were awarded the ‘Fair Play Award’ by the Canterbury Sports Partnership. Congratulations to all the teams that took part but a special mention must go to Canterbury Primary who played exceptionally well throughout the day.
As always, I would like to praise the fantastic Sports Leaders who helped out throughout the day. Without these young volunteers, events like this simply wouldn’t happen. Well done.
Thanks once again to the Canterbury Sports Partnership for inviting me along to yet another excellent day of sport. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am already looking forward to the Basketball Tournament next week.
I hope you all enjoy the gallery from the event and please share this article with anyone you feel may be interested.
