West Ham Prove A Step Too Far For Valiant Bluebirds

In a true David and Goliath battle, the fairy tale ending proved too much for a spirited Margate Ladies team who did their best to thwart the West Ham Ladies’ onslaught.

The difference in level between these two clubs was evident from the whistle as West Ham were quickly on the front foot and it didn’t take long before Margate found themselves behind. Some resolute defending frustrated West Ham but their persistence paid off and by half time the Hammers were four goals ahead.

After the break, the visitors picked up where they left off and, if it hadn’t been for some brave goalkeeping from Andrews, the lead would have been immediately extended.

Margate did have a few chances, one long-range effort convincing the home support that a comeback was possible as a cheer went up around the ground. Unfortunately, the referee indicated the ball had gone wide of the goal and signalled for a goal kick (hole in the net, surely?).

As the game progressed the superior fitness levels and experience of the West Ham team continued to shine through. The game started opening up and gaps in the Margate defence were exploited. If it wasn’t for some excellent last-ditch defending by Scannell and her team-mates and several Word class saves from Andrews, the score could have been much higher, but West Ham Ladies eventually ran out 13-0 winners.

Good luck to the Hammers in the next round of the cup and a huge well done to this young Bluebirds team.

Despite the result, Margate Ladies have a lot to be proud of  this morning ….. they never gave up, they never let their heads drop and they never stopped trying ….. lots of positives to take forward We wish them the best of luck for the rest of their season.
