The u14s made the trip to Maidstone on Sunday looking to improve on the previous weeks performance against Deal. Thanet started well showing their attacking intent against a big Maidstone side. Experimenting with some positional changes the gamble appeared to pay off with the team telling well from the start. The big Maidstone pack shoving the Thanet pack backwards at the first scrum looked ominous however the pack learnt from this and from then on in were dominant in the scrums and rucks.
Captain Max capitalising from some quick ball scoring the first try of the game only to find out it was disallowed after running over the dead ball line cleverly concealed by the autumn leaves !
It didn’t take long for him to make amends scoring 3 more tries before half-time 2 converted by Harrison to go into half time leading 19 to nil. Thanet then took their foot off the pedal allowing Maidstone back into the game their big forward making in roads into the brave Thanet defence. Maidstone scoring 3 unanswered tries bring the score back to 19 to 17 with 5 mins to go. A bit like the previous day’s England game, the coaches faced a nervous last few minutes.
However, the boys upped their games again and another strong run by Captain Max scored his 4th try of the game. A good retake from the kick-off led to the try of the games with all the players involved with some quick recycling from the ruck and some good handling in the backs resulting in Flanker Flynn who had supported well all game taking the scoring pass and scoring in the last minute to confirm a great 29 to 17 win.
Player of the week was difficult to choose from but Sam M playing a number 8 clinched it for some great runs and some crunching tackles in defence. This performance bodes well for the Kent Cup 1st round in 2 weeks.
