With the sun shining over Sheppey, and off the back of recent wins at Canterbury, two teams of Thanet Wanderers under 9s arrived confidently to take part in the East Kent Tournament.

This confidence wasn’t misplaced, despite facing some tough and sizeable opposition, the Wanderers did themselves proud winning seven out of eight games in this their first “proper” contact tournament.

From the off they attacked well, making surges allowing them to create and find space. When the opposition tackles stuck there was support to hand and the coaches were elated to hear them calling for the ball before receiving it at pace. Passing was on the whole unselfish and tidy. The defence was equally stout, with them receiving plaudits from the opposition coaches for their commitment and organisation, from which counter attacks flourished.

It was a long day but they kept well fed, watered and focused until the close.

Special mention must go to Bella, Callum and Zack who, after only a few weeks of training, glided seamlessly into the teams, running, passing and tackling as if they’d been playing for years.

Well done to everyone involved and thank you to Peter Ruranski, Director of Marketing for Thanet Wanderers RUFC, for providing this report.
