Last weekend, I attended a fantastic music event in the main hall of Canterbury Primary School. ‘Soulful Hands And Voices’, featuring three local choirs, was performed to a packed audience and catered for a whole range of musical tastes.

The first thing that struck me as I arrived was how many people had turned up to watch the event. There wasn’t a spare seat to be found. The atmosphere was great as proud parents, friends and guests all chatted with choir members as they prepared for their performances.

First up were ‘SENsational Choir’.

Canterbury’s only SEN Choir for disabled children and their siblings, these amazing youngsters really impressed as they were joined by pupils from Canterbury Primary School to open the show with cracking renditions of ‘Count on Me’ and ‘Love Shine a Light’ .

The audience played their part, too, singing along and clapping their hands throughout.

Next to take centre stage were ‘Lyrical Hands Signing Choir’, who use Makaton Sign Language, set to a range of music, as a fun way to engage their audiences and promote signing as a way of developing language and communication skills.

The third choir to perform were the amazing ‘Reach Out Gospel Choir’. Founded in 2011 this Canterbury-based Community Choir feature singers of all ages and abilities and perform a heady mix of soul, gospel and pop music, arranged by their director, Phil Hornsey.

As well as taking it in turns to perform to the crowd, the three choirs also joined forces at various points throughout the evening as the audience were treated to some great versions of songs such as ‘True Colours’ and ‘Shine’.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening’s entertainment. The show was really good fun and smiling faces could be seen around the whole hall from start to finish.

I would like to thank CJ for inviting me along and everyone else for making me feel so welcome. I am already looking forward to catching some of these great performers again at this year’s ‘Festability’.

Huge thanks must also go to the Canterbury Academy Trust, for their continued help and support both for this concert, and in providing the SENsational Choir with rehearsal space.
