Scrumdiddlyumptious Success at Newington

Where else would you find the Trunchbull’s humungous chocolate cake, Matilda’s library, the BFG’s giant boots, George making marvellous science slime drinks, and the Twits in all their bonkers glory?

It had to be the Roald Dahl celebration at Newington Community Primary School in Ramsgate. The magical amazing afternoon, that saw pupils collect Wonka tickets at the door in the hope theirs was the golden winner, finally burst into life after it was scuppered by the sub-zero Beast from the East a few weeks ago.

Pupils and staff wore their own crazy, colourful outrageous outfits of their favourite Dahl characters as they took part in a host of activities and games that were both educational and fun.

There was also the chance for pupils to get sparkly dream catcher jars, take part in an I-pad challenge, test their skills at the James and the Giant Peach ball game, wear a blindfold and pin an eyeball on the face of Mrs Twit, help the BFG find Sophie, make their own Wonka treats, and create Fantastic Mr Fox masks.

At Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory they could dip super slurpy strawberry and marshmallow kebabs into a choc-fountain, while whirly lollipops were a colourful treat.

Head Teacher Cliff Stokes said: “Our pupils love reading and Roald Dahl is one of their favourite authors with such brilliant stories and wonderful characters.

“So I decided to create a Wonka Wonderland which was just fantastic.

“I was astonished at the detail of all the outfits that the pupils wore with help from their very creative and supportive families, and none of it would have been possible without our enthusiastic and dedicated staff who were once again magnificent.”

And the children agreed, summing the whole extravaganza up in one perfect phrase – “It’s scrumdiddlyumptious!”

Thank you, Newington Community Primary School, for sharing an insight into another fantastic celebration event, bringing the curriculum to life. We love Roald Dahl, what’s your favourite book?
