A retelling of a classic thrills a packed audience at Newington Community Primary School
It just wouldn’t be the run up to Christmas without Mince Pies and a good Pantomime, and both were on offer in abundance this morning at Newington Community Primary School.
This year’s production was a retelling of an old classic, and a personal favourite of mine, ‘Snow White’… I remember watching the animated Disney version as a kid and marching around the house with my younger brother and my mum singing ‘Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho’ like it happened yesterday.
This was no ordinary version of the Grimm Fairy Tale though. The staff and students had taken the script and added their very own ‘Team Newington’ style to it. Instead of ‘One day My Prince Will Come’ and ‘Whistle While You Work’ we were treated to Little Mix and even a Seven Dwarf dance routine to the disco classic ‘Car Wash’. It was brilliant.
Although the script and soundtrack had been cleverly amended to make the performance more relevant, the general story-line remained faithful to the original. All of my favourite characters appeared and the new songs complemented the performance perfectly.
I spoke with a few parents, staff and pupils after the show and they all seemed to have enjoyed it as much as I did. I even managed to have a chat with some of the ‘stars’, who explained how hard they’d been rehearsing and learning their lines. The ‘Wicked Queen’ (who really wasn’t that wicked off-stage) explained that the cast had only received the updated script at the beginning of the month. To put together such an accomplished show in such a short time demonstrates just how hard everyone has been working.
Thank you to everyone at Newington CPS for inviting me along, and thank you for your continued support through my first few months in the new job. I am already looking forward to seeing what the New Year brings.
Please enjoy our gallery of the performance, and Merry Christmas to you all.
