Ramsgate Arts Primary School Starry Night Art Stars

Vincent van Gogh’s classic creation Starry Night has been reinterpreted by young artists in Ramsgate.

The work of the Dutch post-impressionist has been studied in depth by pupils at Ramsgate Arts Primary School as part of their arts learning in recent weeks.

A competition run in school was for different interpretations of van Gogh’s oil on canvas painting that he painted in June 1889. It depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village.

Pupils used a variety of techniques including paint, pastels, glitter, colouring pencils, tissue paper, rice, conkers and even rocks and seaweed to create their own Starry Night.

The competition was judged by art teacher Mike Brown and everyone who took part received a certificate, with the winners being awarded a watercolour set and paintbrushes.

Head of School Nick Budge said: “Everyone who entered deserves huge congratulations. The results are brilliant and we are proud of all their efforts.”

The Starry Night paintings are on display in the main entrance and reception area at the school for visitors to enjoy.

The next art competition at RAPS will be inspired by environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy.

Ramsgate Arts Primary School is part of the Viking Academy Trust together with Upton Junior School in Broadstairs and Chilton Primary School in Ramsgate.
