Football Rivalry On Display At St Ethelbert’s

There have always been fierce rivalries in the World of football ….. Real Madrid v Barcelona, Liverpool v Man Utd, England v Germany, Hibernian v Hearts, Everton v Tranmere (sorry, boss) but none stir the competitive juices quite like the mention of a Staff v Students match in a school.

With this in mind, I headed off to St Ethelbert’s RC Primary in Ramsgate this afternoon after a tip-off that the staff had challenged the whole of Year 6 to a game.

As I arrived, the game was just about the start. The students had been split into a number of smaller teams that would rotate onto the pitch against a staff team that looked more than up for the challenge.

The game started of at quite a frenetic pace, with the sheer enthusiasm and energy of the youngsters proving a difficult challenge for the, let’s say ‘more composed’, staff team. However, an early goal for the Year 6 team inevitably changed things and the teachers soon had their ‘game-faces’ on.

The rotation system worked well for the students and they were a constant threat but the teachers fought back valiantly and were soon able to find their eye for goal. The game remained close throughout but the teachers were able to restore the natural balance by winning by the narrowest of margins. The final score was 3:2.

The students and staff seemed to genuinely enjoy the game and beaming smiles were evident all around the school as the match ended. Although the teachers were victorious, it is the Year 6 students who will eventually benefit as the purpose of the match was to raise funds for their Leavers’ Books at the end of the year.

What struck me during the afternoon was the strong bond that was evident between staff and students. There was a lot of respect both on and off the pitch between everyone involved. It was a great game to watch and I would like to thank the staff and students for inviting me down for the afternoon.

Please enjoy our gallery of the afternoon and feel free to share this page with those involved.
