Dahl Day of Delights
Dahl Day of Delights
Sub-zero temperatures couldn’t break the spell that children’s favourite author Roald Dahl has over pupils and staff at Newington Community Primary School in Ramsgate.
Children, teachers and support staff have been praised by Head Teacher Cliff Stokes for battling through one of the coldest winter days in living memory to celebrate their Dahl Day of Delights – Newington’s contribution to the recent World Book Day event on 1st March.
Familiar characters and costumes from the author’s superb creations and stories were everywhere with Willy Wonka, orange-faced green-haired Oompa Loompas, the witches, BFG, Matilda, George and his marvellous medicine, Fantastic Mr Fox, and several dragons were among the popular characters in classrooms, corridors and the dining hall.
Pupils of all ages enjoyed numerous book-related activities that not only develops their abilities to read but encourages their love of reading.
A special Roald Dahl event was planned for after school that included the making and tasting of Wonka treats but as the icy weather toughened its grip on the area during the afternoon, the event was postponed for a few weeks.
Mr Stokes said:
“Part two of our Roald Dahl celebration will be a spectacular event for children, staff and families. If the turn out from World Book Day is anything to go by it will be as magical as the characters and stories that captivate us all.”
Deputy Head Teacher Wayne Beech added:
“Loving books and being excited to immerse yourself in a thrilling story is the right of every child, and should be nurtured from the youngest of ages.”
Thank you for sharing your fantastic update with us, Newington Community Primary School. We love World Book Day and completely agree with your Deputy Head Teacher, Mr Beech when he says that a love of books is the right of every child and one that should be nurtured from all ages.
