Book Week Launches Reading Projects at Chilton Primary School
To mark national book week, Chilton Primary School in Ramsgate has launched a special reading ambassador project. Two pupils from each class have been chosen by their classmates for the literacy development role, and they will support Assistant Head of School Hannah Cheshire on reading projects.
Miss Cheshire said: “We have celebrated book week with a number of activities. On Monday we had a class swap where children had the chance to share a book with a child from a different year group.
“We have also had a teacher swap this week where teachers have had the chance to read a story to a different class.”
Book Day on March 1 was celebrated with a special themed assembly and pupils and staff dressed as their favourite characters from their best-loved stories. Miss Cheshire said: “It was really colourful with brilliant outfits on show.”
She added: “Throughout book day the school bell rung at random times and we all had to ‘Stop and Read’ for 10 minutes.
“We have also launched various reading challenges. Gracie Dennis-Bennett won the challenge over February half term by reading for 13hrs and 20 minutes.
“During Easter, the children will be challenged to read in 20 different ways such as in their pyjamas or to a pet.”
The week was completed by having a storyteller in residence at the school library every day after school.
Miss Cheshire said: “Literacy and the development of language and communication skills are central parts of our learning at Chilton. The book week was very successful and I am sure we all broadened our skills as well as having fun.”
Chilton Primary School is part of the Viking Academy Trust together with Upton Junior School, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
