Ancient Greek Day

On Monday 23rd April, Year 5 pupils at St Laurence Junior Academy participated in an Ancient Greek day. The workshop was run by “Living History Workshops” and gave pupils a hands-on experience of what Greek life was like all those many years ago.

Pupils were thoroughly engaged in the day and were able to dress like Greeks, fight like Spartans, celebrate like an Athenian and take part in Ancient Greek rituals.

Stephen (aged 10) said,

“The day was extremely enjoyable and I loved being able to take part in a real Olympic Games!”

The rousing success of the day will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the future learning of the pupils, as they continue to study the Ancient Greeks in history.

Thank you, St Laurence in Thanet Academy, for sending us your terrific press release. To learn about history it is brilliant to fully immerse ourselves and what a terrific way to do this! What fabulous costumes you are all wearing as well.

The Ancient Greeks hold a special place in history and have had quite an influence in the lives we lead now. Our favourite element is Greek Mythology and learning about the belief systems held by the Ancient Greeks. This influenced their literature and inspired some of our most treasured epic poems, the top two that spring to mind are Homer’s ‘The Iliad’ and ‘The Odyssey’. In fact, the terms ‘epic poetry’ and ‘Greek epic’ would not exist if it wasn’t for the rich history of Ancient Greece.
